The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

the-underground-railroadThis is not only our book club read for January, but Placer County has chosen it for our One Book One Community event. Colson Whitehead received the National Book Award for his book. The Underground Railroad is described as “a tour de force chronicling a young slave’s adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South.”

I suspect it is a lot more than that. I am really looking forward to hearing Whitehead speak about his book. It seems to me that there are many layers and I feel ignorant in my ability to ferret out hidden meanings. It started when I got to the part where the Underground Railroad was an ACTUAL train. Tracks in tunnels under ground. Suddenly I realized that every event in the story had a deeper meaning.

My first step was talking it over with the book club. They had a lot to say about the book. Metaphor, magical representation, symbols, some of us liked that component of the books, while others were put off by it. We all agreed we would have like a deeper relationship with the characters, particularly Cora, the main character. We all are looking forward to hearing Whitehead speak because…well we were a bit confused at times and want to hear about his view of the story and why he wrote it and his message.

Anyway…read it! Join in with the fun activities in Auburn surrounding the choice of this book for One Book.
